Study: Triathletes Recover Better with Probiotics


A new study published in Nutrients has found that a supplement containing probiotics, prebiotics and antioxidants reduced endotoxin levels in triathletes prior to and 6 days following a performance event. The supplement containing just prebiotics and probiotics showed decreased endotoxins 6 days following the event.  No changes were found in the placebo group.

The probiotics included two strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis and B. bifidum plus selected synbiotics and antioxidants.

The analysis followed a 12 week daily course of the supplement variations.  The authors conclude that a pre/probiotic/antioxidant­­ regime may aid endurance athletes especially those with potential gastrointestinal problems.
