Probiotics are making news in the maternal health community. A new study published in the British Journal of Nutrition has studied 400+ expectant mothers’ risk for gestational diabetes.
Mothers that received 6 billion CFU’s of Lactobacillus rhamnosis (HN001) between 14 and 16 weeks of gestation had a reduced risk of gestational diabetes. Even mothers with a history of gestational diabetes had a lowered risk. This is the first study to report a role for probiotics in the prevention of gestational diabetes.
