Research on the ability of probiotics to survive the digestive tract is not perfect. But a recent study shed some light on how well Lactobacillus can survive the acidity of the human stomach, and that is “like a boss.”
Lactobacillus is the poster child of probiotics.
Lactobacillus is a group of bacteria that lives in many parts of our body. Its defining characteristic is that it produces lactic acid. This acid often creates an environment near the bacteria that limits the growth of other types of bacteria, giving it a leg up in many environments.
Most yogurts contain Lactobacillus strains as do many probiotics. H2PRO™’s probiotic blend consists of two strains of Lactobacillus and two strains of Bifidobacterium. These four separate species are well- studied strains from good bacteria commonly found in the human gut.
Does probiotic preparation affect Lactobacillus survivability?
In 2001, Dunne et al., found that Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus were both capable of surviving 1 hour of prolonged gastric acidity. Lactobacillus species have also been found to survive the transit of the entire digestive tract .
However, there are many probiotic delivery methods out there. Does their method of preparation affect the survivability of the probiotic?
For example, H2PRO™ is a lyophilized powder, that’s a fancy description for a freeze-dried powder. H2PRO™ +therefore, does not require refrigeration since the bacteria are dormant and will reanimate when they arrive in a suitable, moist environment like your body. Other probiotic delivery methods include yogurt, yogurt drinks and capsules.
Research at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, found Lactobacillus survives up to 5 hours of gastric acidity without compromising survival of the Colony Forming Units or CFU’s, regardless of what delivery method is used . They studied lyophilized powder, encapsulated and non-encapsulated pills as well as dairy preparations like yogurt and kefir.
While this method doesn’t include a clinical trial in humans it begins to shed light on what resilient bacteria Lactobacillus are. Future research should look into how or when taking probiotics improves their benefits or under what conditions probiotics might permanently colonize the gut resulting in more permanent benefits.
Truly, probiotics are the novel therapies of the future. We are confident that research will continue to clarify how probiotics benefit the body, how diet or exercise benefit your microbes and how disease can be prevented or managed when your microbiome is healthy.
H2PRO™ is a probiotic powder that contains Lactobacillus.
With H2PRO™ there is no pill or refrigeration. Take it to the gym for healthy hydration. Take it to work for a healthy drink with lunch. Send it to school with the kids. Camping, traveling……anywhere.
