Lactobacillus survives like a boss.

Research on the ability of probiotics to survive the digestive tract is not perfect.  But a recent study shed some light on how well Lactobacillus can survive the acidity of the human stomach, and that is “like a boss.”

Lactobacillus is the poster child of probiotics.

Lactobacillus is a group of bacteria that lives in many parts of our body. Its defining characteristic is that it produces lactic acid.  This acid often creates an environment near the bacteria that limits the growth of other types of bacteria, giving it a leg up in many environments.

In 2001, Dunne et al., found that Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus were both capable of surviving 1 hour of prolonged gastric acidity.  Lactobacillus species have also been found to survive the transit of the entire digestive tract [1].

However, there are many probiotic delivery methods out there.  Does their method of preparation affect the survivability of the probiotic?

Research at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, found Lactobacillus survives up to 5 hours of gastric acidity without compromising survival of the Colony Forming Units or CFU’s, regardless of what delivery method is used [1].  They studied lyophilized powder, encapsulated and non-encapsulated pills as well as dairy preparations like yogurt and kefir.

While this method doesn’t include a clinical trial in humans it begins to shed light on what resilient bacteria Lactobacillus are. Future research should look into how or when taking probiotics improves their benefits or under what conditions probiotics might permanently colonize the gut resulting in more permanent benefits.
