The Papa-Bear of Probiotic strains: Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM is the Papa-Bear of probiotics.

If you take H2PRO™, eat yogurt or drink kefir, it’s probably in your belly, fighting the good fight for health and wellness. It is also a common resident of our mouths, GI tract and urogenital tract.

Probiotics are bacteria that confer a health benefit on the recipient when taken in high enough doses (WHO, 2001).

L. acidophilus NCFM has been on the market for 30 years as a probiotic in the U.S. after having been isolated in a lab at North Carolina State University Food Science Department. In that time it has proven itself safe while billions have been consumed in a variety of mediums like yogurt, baby formula and H2PRO™.

Well-Researched Probiotic Strains Have Guts

Our strains are well researched. And L. acidophilus NCFM has a deep pool of research regarding its behavior in vitro (in the lab), in animal studies and importantly, in humans.

Generally speaking, research has determined that a gut microbiome higher in Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species is a healthier gut [1]. And the probiotic theory goes that a gut, where up to 80% of our immune system cells reside, when it is healthy and diverse impacts and improves many aspects of our health.  The potential is that a healthy gut with lots of ‘good bugs’ can aid immunity, reduce inflammation and potentially reduce disease risk.

We aren’t just tossing the first available probiotic strain your way, we have chose this strain because it’s tough and it is likely to confer a health benefit, straight to your gut.

Research Reveals…

In vitro, or in the laboratory, studies enable scientists to simplify a system and look at an organism with minimal complications.  These studies help us understand the nuts and bolts of the organism’s metabolism, environmental parameters and other details difficult to tease out if the organism in in situ (in your guts).

These in vitro studies reveal that L. acidophilus NCFM survives the intestinal tract like a boss (see another H2PRO™ blog on this topic).  This organism survives the very low pH of the upper GI tract and it also has an ability to bind to intestinal epithelial cells [1].  Increased binding to the intestinal wall is not always necessary for a probiotic benefit to occur, but in this case, binding increases contact with immune cells and promotes the continued presence of the organism in the GI tract, potentially extending the life of the probiotic benefits.

Additional laboratory studies indicate the L. acidophilus NCFM has bactericidal properties that inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria like Clostridium sp. and Salmonella sp.  While the intestinal interaction may vary, the indications are good that L. acidophilus NCFM doesn’t get pushed around by the bad guys.  In fact, L. acidophilus NCFM has been shown in the lab to prevent the binding of these same pathogenic bacteria to the intestinal wall [1]. Booya.

In animal studies, L. acidophilus NCFM shows benefits.  Mice fed this probiotic strain were found to have decreased pre-cancer markers in the intestine [1].

In human studies, the real barometer of probiotic effectiveness, L. acidophilus NCFM doesn’t disappoint.  It has been shown not only survive the intestinal tract but also to increase the numbers of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in general [1].  Other studies indicate a reduction in lactose intolerance, diarrhea and an effective maintenance of bacterial populations during and after antibiotic therapy reduced respiratory symptoms, sick days and illness duration [1].

Another study revealed that 6 out of 7 probiotics stimulated the immune system in adults, including B. lactis Bi-04 (also found in H2PRO™) as well as our Papa-Bear, L. acidophilus NCFM.  They were found to stimulate increased Immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the body [2]. IgG is associated with immune ‘memory.’  The authors postulate that increased levels of IgG may potentially lead to long term disease prevention through immune health and immune system memory [2].

H2PRO™ uses cornerstone strains for maximum health benefits.

With strains like these in an easy to take, tasty formulation, H2PRO™ provides for your probiotic needs with the additional of a daily dose of vitamins.  It’s a match made in Asheville, NC.
